Changes in Streptococcus mutans Counts, Gingival Bleeding, and Halitosis after the Application of Incremental Dental Care System among Female College Students

Abstract


Objective: In this study, we observed changes in Streptococcus mutans counts, gingival bleeding, and halitosis following the application of Incremental Dental Care System. The purpose of this study was to encourage female college students to recognize the importance of oral care for promoting a healthy lifestyle among them.

Methods: In total, 100 female college students were randomly selected for the study. From March to December 2018, changes in S. mutans counts, gingival bleeding, and halitosis were observed in the participants following the application of Incremental Dental Care System.

Results: The observations made following the application of the system are as follows. The mean change in S. mutans counts was ?0.20000¡¾0.63564 (95% confidence interval [CI] ?0.032613 to ?0.7387); the t-value was ?3.146 (p=0.002), showing a significant change. The mean change in gingival bleeding was ?0.33000¡¾0.49349 (95% CI ?0.42792 to ?0.23208); the t-value was ?6.687 (p=0.000), showing a significant change. The mean change in halitosis was ?0.04000¡¾1.27065 (95% CI ?0.29212 to ?0.21212); the t-value was ?0.315 (p=0.754), showing no significant change.

Conclusion: In the regression analysis, significance was 0.000 and the significance level was 0.05, indicating that S. mutans counts, gingival bleeding, and halitosis significantly changed following the application of Incremental Dental Care System.
